Just been to get a Hambleton-Bard cylinder and shopkeeper said not to condition in the fridge as it wrecks the carbonation and may cause the beer to suck in air when a drink is taken.

Also in terms of using the cylinder he said to give it a blast of no more than a second where I have heard people say leave it in to keep co2 in and air out.

A bit of clarity please...

For a plastic pressure barrel, I found a 1 second blast was enough. It'll never force carbonate as the plastic is too pliable, but should keep it in condition.

If you cold condition it, a further second of gas should be enough - just be careful if you do that then bring it into the warm as the pressure will rise a bit.

I think he means with the hambleton bard type co2 bottles only give it a short burst to dispense as the valve can freeze and stick then you lose the co2 in the bottle if it sticks you can put the valve in some warm water to unstick it the bigger co2 bottles that fit cornies etc don't have the same type of valve as for sucking in air it's a new one on me

I do have plastic barrel... It has had two weeks indoors to carbonate now I have it in the fridge as per recommendation in another post. I planned to give it 4 weeks as it is 3.6 abv then get it out and gas it so no air gets in as it is poured (does this require gas to be added for each drink then?) Was starting to feel confident and am back to square 1. Will take the opinion of people on here above his as he was calling the barrel condition secondary fermentation that its a different thing so it could be a misunderstanding...

I've a tap a draft system , my LHBS keeper did tell me when I bought it that if I kept it too cold it would use the CO2 soda stream cannisters like there was no tomorrow!
