Cold brewing

Hi,

I really want to get some beer brewing done, but my available space hovers around 8-10 degrees Celsius

Is this too cold? Any special considerations?

I think you could do some lager style beers using lager yeast (bottom fermenting) at that temp. I've not brewed at that temp or with lager yeast but I have read a bit about it and between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius appears to be the perfect temp, as long as it's constant. I'm sure there are guys on the forum with plenty of knowledge on this subject and hopefully they'll reply to you with a bit more info than I've been able to share :wha:

for conditioning beers that's perfect. for fermenting its way too cold I'm afraid.

You could use a brewbelt if you have access to power.

you will be able to brew lager ok, although you may be a tad on the cold side, however you will be fine, but it will probably take 3-4 weeks to ferment, which is also ok.

The dry yeasts by Fermentis, S-23 and W-34/70 both recommend 12-15C fermentation, so you would be better off with a White Labs yeast, WLP830 or 833 are very good and recommended ferment temperature is 9-13C. You would need to make a big starter.

So some food for thought, lagers are a great syle to brew at home, nothing like Carling or the other muck, if you want to give it a go, there will be plenty of advice on here.
