Hello all.

I've just received my first corny keg and tap and some disconnects. I'm wondering how cheaply I can source the co2 bottle and regulator.

I'm struggling to find a local food grade supplier and the prices online seem crackers...

I'm in huddersfield so any one close by, let me know who supplies your gas :) and an idea of price.

Thanks

If your friendly with any pub landlords they get huge discounts compared to any 1 of buys and are generally close by to collect.

These guys are in Haydock but offer delivery.

You pay about £50 deposit for the bottle and then the cost of the gas £20 per time. My other half uses them for welding gas but he picks it up from their shop on a Saturday morning. The cylinders will need testing every so often to check they are still safe. If you buy one you will be responsible for having it tested. If you rent it's done by the supplier.

Others will be able to say whether the costs are comparible to other suppliers but it's an option if you can't find anyone else. Some people use co2 fire extinguishers but I don't know what regulators you would use for this.

It's some distance away but Rothwell Garden Centre in Leeds has the smaller 3kg co2 bottles as they are Adams Gas suppliers. They charge £75 deposit for the bottle and £25 to refill.

How long do these bottles tend to last? Just looking at the 5ltr bottle on that site and its £7.50 filled to 3.175kg + £40 deposit. And the 10ltr is £20 filled to 7.5kg + £50 deposit. Just trying to keep things cheap as I only have the 1 keg.

I use this chap in Rochdale

I paid about £60 for a 3.5kg cylinder (to keep) and he charges £10 a refill. I don't know if he would deliver though. I drop my empty cylinder off in the morning and then pick it up in the evening.

I would personally go for the smaller 3.5kg cylinder rather than the usual tall 7kg (?). The bigger cylinder is more economical at £15 a refill but too bulky for me. The small cyclinder is more practical e.g. can fit in my fridge with the keg.

The 3.5kg cylinder lasts me about 4-5 months or about 10 brews. But I am quite wasteful with the gas. I use it to purge all equipment to remove oxygen when transferring e.g. to secondary or to bottles. Also, the beer lines on my keg are too big so I have to release all the pressure in the keg then refill everytime I serve a beer!

Remember to ask for pure food grade CO2 (as opposed to pub gas = Agron/Co2 mix)

There is a company, Leeds road in Bradford.

52.50 or 57.50. Full

Don't quite remember, no deposit as you buy the cylinder. So it's your forever, long dates and I'm sure they will test at a later date. Think mine 2022.

Refill is £20-25.
