Hello all
Our milkman just called for his money and copped a stash of saved beer bottles in my kitchen...he nipped back to his float and brought me a crate with some empty 500ml clear glass screw top bottles that they chuck after collection,so can get me loads if I want...
Are these use able?

Cheers

If they have held a 'fizzy' drink they should be OK, otherwise don't use them.
If they are OK, once filled with beer you should store in a dark place.

depends on what they were intended for, simply if used for carbonated drinks then yes ;) the only drawback, being clear they will have no UV protection so keep them stashed in the dark and away from direct sunlight.

Its wisew to check as not all glass is equal, standard wine bottles for example are no good for containing pressure, so without detailed specifications the simple rule of thumb of what was originally in the bottle is the best test available imho..

You could use them for wine or flat ciders if sourcing bottles is a problem.

if stuck for bottles you can buy tesco value carbonated water in 2l pet bottles for 10-11p (last time i bought em..)

they are flimsy pet bottles and need 2 hands to pour without collapsing in the middle but if stuck can sort you out quick n easy for less than £2 ;)

Thanks...I've got 80 odd full and around another 100 empty so not too skint atm but a couple of brews will see them used ..nearly. I'm trying to achieve "critical mass" and steady turnover so I can stop buying as much..
Incidentally has anyone got a working model on achieving critical mass of beer, turnover and conditioning times as I keep running various scenarios through my head but give up as I'm usually getting spangled when I do and it's just too much brain work. ..

Cheers

I've been trying for ages and it's really only me drinking it. I've now got three King Kegs and the aim is to keep two of them full whilst the third is being drunk. I've been planning to do a few brews for bottling to fill in the gaps. I've got two brew fridges so would have been possible to maintain the momentum but then decided during the recent warm weather that I'd prefer my draught beer cool so one of them is currently being used for serving rather than fermenting. Need a third fridge, I'm sure the wife will understand....

The start point for the model is your overall consumption rate, guests included of course.....

I get a bit more complicated if you want a variety of beers too :-o

I do atm have a choice of a ris, saison, punk ipa, abbey beer and a dark triple but sometimes it may dip as low as a choice of 2 :-(
