Hi all,
Double brewday for me. Did a Berliner Weisse with a 15 min boil and though that I should also do a "proper" :D brew. Brewed a Double IPA based on this recipe (Linky) but used Mosaic instead of the Nugget and Amarillo.

Exciting grain shot (why do we do this?). 7400 grams worth...

About as good as it gets when it comes to a photo of pellet hops and a hop sock

Cubed and ready for a yeast cake. Will brew a 10L Black IPA and pitch this beer on top of that yeast cake.

Close enough to the 1.074 I was aiming for.

Nice set up, love the minimalist BIAB and no chill combo! Should be good, I did a similar thing on Friday with Chinook and Citra, Citra is an amazing hop, flavour is off the chart!

I increasingly think with IPAs that you should save all your flavour hops for end of boil hop steep and dry hopping. I reckon your just boiling off the nice flavour compounds with 15 min additions. Not sure what others think about that but it's what I've been doing of late. T

Nice looking brew, also agree with the above, also for dry hopping it is best to do 2 batches of 3 days each than 1 at 7 days, there is some thought that you don't get much out of them after 3 days.

Agreed with the late hop additions. I have started doing bittering, 5mins 0mins and then dry hop for most brews.

Sounds tasty :thumb:

I'm pretty undecided on dry hopping and the long term effects on the beer. Dry hopping does give you a big, in your face, hop flavour/aroma (can somebody differentiate between these two please :wha:) but after a month or so in the bottle it does start to drop off. I'm just wondering if FWH and continuous hopping (5 to 10 gram every 10 minutes) would not extend the hop flavour/aroma of beer in the bottle?! Give it a bit more oomph over a longer period?

Agreed about flavour hops, the later the better! I'm brewing today and the flameout hops won't go in 'til the wort has cooled to 90C. This is to try to get as much of the flavour out as possible. I bottled my last brew the other day and the intensity of the hops seems MUCH greater than similar beers with hops added as soon as the heat is turned off.

On the continent and the US especially there is a big thing about adding hops at FWH 60, 45, 15, 10, 5, 1 etc intervals in the brew but it does depend on how vigorus your boil is going to be and how quickly your are cooling your beer. If you are using an IC then over the 20-45 (in my case) then it seems like abit of a waste of time. Lots at 5-1m or at flame out.

Dry hopping makes the best effect if its in the beer for 2-3 weeks. If I cask of beer is dry hopped for less that 4 weeks before serving I am not sure its not the full effect. If you really want the punchy 'craft' hop aromas then dry hop in the FV with pellets made up the pellets with boiling water in to a viscus paste and mix in the beer (minimal splashing) at the end of fermentation or 2/3rd of the way thru and rouse the beer to get it finished down to FG.

An interesting idea I may try was some breweries using a 10min addition only. All the bittering comes from a very short boil which also then leaves a punchy residual flavour / aroma as the oils are not boiled off. Worth a try in my book for a single hop beer you have done before or a hop you know well.

I've wondered about doing a ten min only brew. Presumably you need a shed load of hops ?

Win! Yet another excuse to throw more hops at a beer : )

Give it a gentle swirl! Get those hops involved. Looks like a school disco at the moment.
