Hi

I am brewing a stout next week using partial mash for the first time! Exciting! I was wondering though, what do you think about adding chocolate malt to the mash with the black patent malt?

Alemans Effin Oatmeal stout has about 2% chocolate malt in it well at least my version of it does. :thumb:

If my starting recipe contains 65g of patent malt, and a recipe I find calls for 11g of chocolate malt, would I do:

a) 65g + 11g = 76g
b) 55g + 11g = 65g

I would opt for b well 54g of patent +11g of chocolate. That way you are not upsetting the balance of the original recipe to much. You will drop a few points in colour theoretically but I doubt you would notice on a stout.
