When I first started home brewing I only drank "lager" Budweiser,Coors and the like, there,I've said it :oops: and I was sure I would only brew Coopers lager and similair types.
I progressed onto beers like Williams Bros hopped efforts/IPA hybrids and then brewed a Festival Golden Stag but thought it was too hoppy and was almost certain I would scale back on the hops.
Fast forward a year and I opened a bottle of my latest batch of this and wondered if I had forgotten to add half the hops :hmm:
I am now onto brewing the Youngs range and started adding only 70g or so of the hops but have just dumped in 100g into the fv with my AAA and I'm thinking where is this all going to end ? Will I start taking a swig of beer in between munching on my hop sandwiches?
I still enjoy the odd lighter beer but will my obsession ever scale back ?
What about you guys, anyone else not recognise their "old" self :hat:

Very much so. I had been drinking French brewed supermarket lager and the cheap supermarket ciders for so long, I had forgotten what actual beer was. So a homebrew Coopers lager seemed great.

Then a year or so later, hoppy, or maltier beers and even Saison is on the drinks menu. Would only do the Coopers lager with blackberries or some other tweak now.

The Secret Santa at work brought me 2 small bottles of craft brewed pale ales around Xmas and they were, I felt at least, of a similar quality to the ones I have made recently (and not cocked up).

Ha, I was thinking this last night as I whacked the full bag of hops into my Festival Golden Stag!
Lifelong lager bore and only started drinking ale a couple of months before I started homebrewing last year. Didn't really like 'hoppy' beer and until last night I haven't added the full amount of hops but now I want to add them even if they don't come with the kit. I still prefer the lighter coloured ales but give it another 6 months I'll probably be swilling stout

I've been drinking real ales/stouts/porters for years but absolutely hated my first try of an American IPA (Punk). Now, however, I generally prefer the hoppier beers (although not quite the full-scale hop bombs - yet).

I am in exactly the same position; 2 years ago I wouldn't have touched 'pondwater' as it was affectionately referred to, Carlsberg was in fact my beer of choice.

I've Just brewed a Belgian Tripel at 10.7% and an Imperial IPA at an estimated 8% with nigh on a pound of hops in a 20l batch. It is amazing how tastes can develop in such a short period of time.

Yep, I'm similar. I used to drink mostly stouts and porters with the ocassional lager but then in July last year the missus bought me an AG starter kit with an American APA and it's completely transformed my drinking habits. As soon as I'd brewed the first kit and enjoyed the process (long before sampling the beer!) my first thought was "if I'm going to do this I better start trying different things to see what else I can brew" and since then I've found I really like lots (in fact most!) different styles of beer. My brewing still isn't up to the standard of shop/pub bought but I'm still brewing varieties I'm enjoying. I do still drink stouts and porters but as part of a much more balanced diet. :-D

Like a lot of us when I was younger I just drank lager. Now whilst I do enjoy a lager every now and then it wasn't until a few years ago..

I was niave and thought ales and bitters ect were just like John Smiths (which imo tastes like creamy canned chemicals)

But it might have been my 29th birthday or xmas a few years back my now wife bought me some hobgoblin... I didn't realise beer could be so good and then went into Tesco and started trying all the different ones, hoppy ones and old cracfty hens bishops fingers.. my eyes widened.
