We're going to have a fair number of prosecco bottles after a party, and I'm wondering about reusing them for beer?

They're the Aldi organic ones which are shaped a bit like a large beer bottle, and the top looks like it'll probably take a 29mm crown cap?

I'll have to get a bench capper to attempt it, so wanted to see if anyone else has given this a try before spending out on a new capper (my current one is a metal hand/wing capper which I think only does 26mm).

I've re-used that style of bottle a number of occasions and recently bought a bunch of them (brown champagne bottles) to bottle a Belgian dark strong that I intend to age for some time. they work totally fine but as you say you need to buy the 29mm caps and use a suitable capper. luckily, in my case, the hand capper I have can be quite easily converted to use the larger crown caps - my capper is an Italian one made by Ferrari (presumably not the sport car maker) and the model/name is 'Emily'. I got it with a starter kit when I began brewing over 5 years ago. I often hear folk slating the hand cappers but this one has lasted me well and works great.

Shouldn't be a problem as that is exactly what they do with them when making Prosecco, crown capped initially to carb up, then stored upside down to get the sediment into the neck, then frozen (the neck), cap off, remove frozen sediment plug, stick in flanged cork and cage.

One of these will be perfect for the job and any other beer bottle you care to throw at it: http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk...ed-suits-26mm-and-29mm-crown-caps-p-2187.html

If you've a wine corker hanging around, you can use that to cork those bottles. I used a Wilko corker and Belgian corks and cages from Malt Miller. Worked a treat!

My labelling game could probably use some work though...
