I picked up an urn for free, great but it only boils 18L. so the plan is to remove the fittings, element, tap, thermostat and fit them onto a larger vessel.

The original plan was to use a plastic fermenter but the way the element is designed (enters middle of bottom) it runs about 1mm from the base. I suspect this will melt it..???

do I need to bin the cheap option and buy a big shiny tub?

Yeah, but pregnant wife may may have somthing to say when we got stuff like prams to buy. All ready have an fv I could use, but would it melt?

ok, so the suggestion of spending money on a big shiny pot to 'just to brew beer...' (she doesn't get it) didnt go down too well. however i did manage to slip two budget kettles into the shopping basket and have resorted to turning plastic fv into standard type boiler. shiny will have to wait. now... how to sneak in a mash tun..... in the mean time extract #1 here we go.
