I always take a sample pour it into a test jar and take the reading, I was woundering if I could do the same by just plonking the hydrometer into the FV and take my reading this way.. is it okay to do this??
:?:

You could do, but then you don't get the chance to taste it. It's also harder to read.

Make sure the hydrometer is properly sanitised if you are going to do it though.

You you can take a reading by doing this . . . but you can't take an accurate reading by doing so. . . . and when the hydrometer is covered in crud it changes weight making it about as accurate as a chimpanzee with a stick balance on a rock!
