Hey all, reasons why i am asking really is just to be on the safe side of things. I have moved my fermenting bin from my garage to the conservatory where its nice and warm at the moment. But it is also very bright! do you think this will make it skunk r should it be ok. serpose i should tell you about the fermenting bin, its white like more fermenting bins but i can see my cider colour though it (see picture for a better description.) my camera makes it look dark but it is actually really bright in there.

So any ideas r if you think i should move it let me know thanks all!

When I was paranoid about it, I used to cover them with bin bags.

Never noticed any difference though to be honest.

That being said, I never kept them in direct sunlight anyway.

Cider won't skunk, or were you asking before you get a beer in it?

One of my beer buckets is opaque white plastic, the other is translucent like yours. I keep them out of direct sunlight but I don't wrap them. I haven't noticed a problem yet.

Question for Aleman:
Can kit beers skunk anyway? I ask because unclepumble mentioned about commercial beers sold in clear bottles using isomerised hop extracts, and I've seen those listed on kit ingredients.

If they're purely using the tetra isomerised extract, then no. If there are some standard isomerised acids in there as well, then these could skunk.

I bet the kit manufacturers won't tell you anyway.

Thanks Aleman, I didn't recognise you in that disguise.
Sorry, I should have said “Aleman or anyone else who knows their brewing chemistry”.

Ok as long as cider carnt skunk thats ok. ill probs put a bin bag over then on my next batch of beer if i decide to keep it there. Thanks guys

It's hop residues which react with ultra-violet light.
No hops in cider - no problem. :thumb:

A bit harsh. I don't know jamesb but I do know that he gives good advice and knows more than I on the subject and in the absence of Alemans reply I would be happy to go by what he posted. Whether somebody does or does not understand 'brewing chemistry' I feel that shooting someone down who in your own opinion obviously doesn't fill the credentials that you desired is out of order. Ask (or answer) questions on a public forum, you're likely to get replies, and not necessarily the ones you want.

Apologies for the minor rant, it's not intended as a flame but the other guys here are obviously too polite to mention it. Being a Yorkshireman precludes me from using any form of tact or decorum. :)

Sorry Parva, I think you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick.

When I asked the question, neither Aleman, James, unclepumble or anyone else I thought would be able to answer it were showing as online. I phrased it badly and should have addressed it to a wider audience. James was logged on anonymously and was lurking in the background, and almost immediately gave precisely the sort of reply I was looking for.

My post which you have quoted was intended as a joke apology for the way I had phrased the question in the first place. I'm pretty sure James saw it that way and no offence was taken.
