Hi there,

I'm onto my 2nd kit now (the first I used mineral water which was £££ ) and I want to use normal tap water.

I've bought myself some Campden Powder (it says Sodium Metabisulphate on the label) and I just wanted to check how much to use (as it doesnt say... :| ).
I'm a bit worried its not the right stuff as it does say 'for steralization and cleaning' on the label.... is it ok to use this, or have I bought the wrong stuff?

So how much should I put in - I can only find info for the tablets - are they the same?

Many thanks

It's the right stuff but go very sparingly with it, one teaspoonful is equivalent of 10 campden tablets, and you would only usually use half a tablet to treat 5 gallons. Nuff said?

I use metabisulphite powder in winemaking, mix 2.5 tsps in 250ml of water and keep that in a small bottle as a stock solution. I will then use 10ml of solution in place of 1 campden tablet, or squirt 50ml into a sterilised and rinsed demijohn, add a pint or so of water, cover the neck with tinfoil and swirl it around every few days to keep my DJs ‘sweet’ and good-to-go.
