Hi,
I am going to buy a nordic stock pot but unsure what size to buy so need some help.

I think about 75% of time I will just do a 23 ltr brew but I might want to do an occasional bigger brew in the future.

What size boiler to mashtun combination should it look at buying?

I think I read somewhere that you don’t want a huge amount of empty space in the mash tun ?

a)50 ltr Bolier -£33.18 and THERMOS 38,5 Ltr - £60
b)50 ltr Bolier -£33.18 and THERMOS 50 Ltr - £60
c)70 ltr Bolier - £37.44 and THERMOS 38.5 Ltr - £60
e)70 ltr Bolier - £37.44 and THERMOS 50 Ltr - £63
e) Something else ?

Price approx. not incl delivery from ebay.

I cannot not go too big (high) as will be doing a gravity feed or manhandle the liquids in a low celling height garage.

My 24.5L( Mash Tun & FV) / 38.5 Litre (HLT & Kettle) vessel brewery will handle a 5 gallon batch at up to about 1.060 . . . . Just about, although I do only 18L brews on it, so can convieveabley go stroner than this with a reduced volume. My future brews in it will only be 15L . . . but that is because I've collected some 9L and 11L Cornelii over the last 12 months, So Keg Some and Bottle Some.

A 38L mash tun will give you the option of going bigger (Volume) or Stronger (Gravity) . . . A 50L Stock pot might be too big for boiling a 23L batch though . . . Think about fitting an immersion cooler in it. . . . most of the chiller will be out of the wort on a 25L batch.

Easily solved though . . . Get two pots for the Kettle :D

I use a 70l stockpot for doing both 25l and 50l batches.

I (think) I've got a 60l thermo as a mash tun.

Works well for both size batches.

I have 70 litre thermo hlt, 70l thermo boiler and 38.5 litre thermo mash tun and do 40+L upto 1060 but that is a squeeze in the mash tun. they are the one with taps in. Thermos for electric elemnets saves on power.

I can brew 23l without any problem but is takes just as long as 46 litres so why bother? but 23 litres of a 1080 fits fine.

If I could do over I would go for 80l and 50l and do a muddydisco conversion with bottom taps, just beacuse they are the ducks nuts.

I wouldn't be overly worried about half filling a mash tun and then every now and then filling it to make a big beer or larger brew length. The issue appears mainly if the tun is wide and shallow it will lose heat, but the relative dimensions and insulative properties of the thermoboxes mean they're fine. Don't worry about the "airspace", when compared to the thermal capacity of the mash any cold air there won't have much of an effect,

Thanks everyone, placed order on Sunday on eBay, got email saying despatched today. Asked to be delivered to work but think they are sending it to home address and nobody will be in ! Hopefully they will re deliver or I am in trouble.

As a matter of interest, how much are they charging for carriage?
I am looking at a 70 litre pot for a mash tun

I just put the item number into then ebay.co.uk. Bought both items and then ebay automatically combine them together and I paid for them all with a minute of ordering. I did not bother asking for a carriage price for the UK just paid what was on the invoice.

If you email them after it has been despatched you can ask them for a parcel tracking number to track your parcel.

Hi chaps

newbie here but excited about getting cracking. Couple of questions:

1. Are there any step-by-step guides on how to convert 50l stock pots to HLT and boliers anywhere?

2. It seems that the only thermal pots available on eBay now are 38.5 litres. Is this right or am I searching for the wrong thing? http://shop.ebay.fr/i.html?_nkw=MAR...rksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313&LH_ClassifyToggle=0

Any help very much appreciated.

Simon

Good choice on the sizes and congratulations, nice kit

Awesome thanks Vossy. looks mighty impressive! I'll keep my eye on eBay for pots. Are these the only company that do them btw?

Cheers

Simon
