Go home from karate to find Sky box busted. Won't power on. Tried the reset procedures. Zilch. Power light flickers: suspect failed power supply.
Have 3rd party insurance on it, will call them when their office opens tomorrow, but wondering if it's time to upgrade from + to HD+ (we did recently buy an HD telly, after all!)
Think Sky will do me a deal if I call them instead?

they will automatically replace your sky box with an HD box ( they dont supply any other now )
However you would still need to take out the HD subscription to get HD channels.
Mine went a few weeks ago and they replaced it....at a considerable cost...and I refused to take out their HD subscription

They'll definitely do you a deal if you're upgrading anything or likewise cancelling anything, they work hard to keep their customers and bar one or two horror stories their service I second to none I think, really helpfull.

Well the 3rd part ins co may have some non-HD boxes, but hopefully not, and that won't cost me owt...
Then we can wait for the inheritance to arrive before we upgrade (January-ish)

Assuming we get to keep the dead box (think we did last time we had a failure) anybody know how to hook the HD up to something to get the recorded progs off? Disk was nearly half full!

If you have been with them over a 12 month just say your leaving, that you had a better offer from someone else. I did that and got a free HD+ box and sky sports half price for 3 months

I know of 2 people that have phone and asked to cancel. They are so so desperate to keep custom they offer upgrades at reduced prices. I know my daughter got a very good deal from them.

If your insurance is separate from sky I'd go to sky first, but obviously if its through sky that's not hapnin, I don't know about moving stuff from one hard drive to another but maybe there's a way.

My old boss genuinely wanted to cancel his when his wife was made redundant and he explained the situation to them and they gave him a year half price so they could get back on their feet without sacrificing the sky, really decent of them I thought !!

I phone them up every 8 months or so and always get a pretty decent reduction / deal :thumb:

I wish it worked like that with everything, un life, tell the woman at the checkout in asda that your going to tesco and then get your shopping for half price, that would be great lol.

I copied the stuff from my old box on to the hard drive on my DVD recorder when I was upgrading. It was as simple as running it through the recorder then into the telly but you'll struggle to do that if it won't power up.

Yeh, I need to whip the disk out, stick it in a caddy, and hook it up to the PC.
If they won't let me keep it there are a few boxsets being bought shortly!

I seem to remember trying this when I ditched Sky-pretty sure the files were encrypted (although you may be more knowledgeable than me IT wise).IDE drive as well (was a few years ago)

I really dont understand why Sky have to charge for HD? Surely its the standard now? If a box comes with a HD output then why charge to use it? You don't pay extra for stereo?

Switch to virgin :thumb: you will most likely get a TiVo box for free. I kicked up a fuss over an install and they upgraded my internet and gave me a free TiVo box. However now its standard install.

If anything you should get a discount for not having a HD TV? Perhaps the government should do a TV tax where you pay by the inch per house capita? Oh wait did I say that? Maybe it'll be a stealth tax.. they are watching... Im a leftie really!

*drinks his untaxable booze in the cellar* :drink: :drink: (before its taxed) :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

D

A friend tells me it depends if it was a free-to-air prog. And you need to install the right drivers to read the disk, but that's not a big deal.

Why they charge extra for HD - it's called capitalism. If you don't like it move to Cuba etc etc etc only joking
It does use more bandwidth, obv.

Virgin? Isn't that Cable? None round here! This is those mysterious hills to the north of Rochdale and Oldham. It's Different here. On terrestrial, before the digital switch, we only got 4 channels, and one of those was iffy
