Bought a burton whitelabs yeast from thrifty shopper (malt miller didnt have any in stock at the time) and put it on a 1 litre starter along side an old wlp013 I had split in the fridge. Used the same wort split in 2 but the wlp013 went off straight away and burton hasnt done a thing. Its been 18hours now. Is burton known to be a bit of a slow starter or is a badly kept vial? BB says 14th may.

I wouldn't worry just yet, I have used thrifty shopper white labs yeasts 12-15 times and never had a problem with one.

Whilst I haven't personally used the Burton strain, I have had an Abbey yeast take nearly 48 hours before showing signs of krausen and airlock activity

its still not going :( and its only a 1 litre starter. the wlp013 i got out me fridge is flying away next to it and they had the same wort all pitched at the same temp so I know its not me. Also I literally got the starters going as soon as the delivery came through the door.

Hello,
I use burton yeast. I take the stater out of the fridge 12 hours before use. I mix spraymalt with boiled tapwater cool and and open starter drain off liquid and mix with malt solution. Then I put the milk bottle in my mashtun coolbox filled up to the liquid level of the milk bottle with water at 75oF put the lid on and wait 24 hours. I do find Burton a slow starter but when it gets going it is a great yeast.
All the best

I split a tube of burton five ways and it didn`t take long to kick off, also the starter I made from the split yeast took of quite quickly (hours not days) Hope yours gets going though - what is the planned brew with the burton i`ve done a best bitter and a stout, both were spot on :thumb:

it is just showing minor signs of starting now. Hope it goes ok. The planned brew is my house best which I have previously done with nottingham

4 k mo
100g amber
120g crystal
50g dark crystal
100g flaked barley
100g crystal wheat

previously I used challenger and EKG but this time I am using mainly EKG with willamette. Hoping that the spicey EKG and fruity Willamette will work well with the burton yeast. I haven't got any challenger but I think a little would be nice to just round off the flavours.

I agree - the burton is a little fruity :P and definetley benifits from a few weeks conditioning in my opinion and works well with more traditional hops :thumb:

Better to buy 2 bottles of Brakespear Triple and culture a starter from the dregs of the 2 bottles than spend £5 plus on white labs Burton yeast, as AFAIAA they are one in the same strain.

Cheaper and you get to drink the waste material.

True Burton Strains are not slow startersor finishers, 3-4 days all done usually. But a rest post fermentation is advisable
