Hi All

I'm going to try and do some AG brewing here at my brew shop, and was about to take a brupaks insulated mash tun off the shelf, but I'm trying where possible not to use stock that I may want to sell later. Therefore I was wondering if I could use the brupaks enameled boiler as a mash tun. It seems to have a reasonable quality temperature control and I'm already committed to using it to boil my wort.

Any advice on this matter would be great.

Many thanks in anticipation

Dean

it will be ok to use, just bring the temperature up to strike temp, add the grain and turn the heat off, wrap some insulation around it and sparge as normal after 90 minutes. Or you could always go down the BIAB route.

The temp control is fine for fluid liquids like water and wort, but is crap for viscous liquids like a mash.

You can use it to heat the mash liquor, add the grain, turn the heat off, cover with a duvet and let it mash like that. Then remove the grain into a 'lauter tun' and continue from there.

Hi Dean,

In my opinion, you'll definitely want to use an independent (accurate) thermometer to check your strike and mash temperature, too. I had one of these boilers for a while and the thermostat seemed to operate with a tolerance of about +/-10oC which just isn't accurate enough for a mash, especially as the temperature reading is taken close to the element so won't gather a true reading of the mash temperature as a whole.

Because of this, davesiv definitely has the right idea with regard to turning off the heater and insulating the tun during the mash, rather than leaving the heating element to maintain the temperature :thumb:
