Hello!

I have just been to my local homebrew shop (well, 10 miles away) to pick up what I needed for my first ever batch of homebrew. Unfortunately I managed to miss a vital ingredient - a Brewpot!

I am now looking for a good pot and have a question on pot size.

For my first batch I am doing it the easy way, i.e. I have bought a Tooheys Real Ale Brewing Kit (http://www.wine-on-line.com/USERIMAGES/TOOHEYS.JPG). All I have to do is boil water, add sugar and the kit, cool, ferment, bottle and drink. I do however in the future plan to make my own beer using the raw materials, i.e. own hops etc etc, which I understand would require a much larger pot.

What size brewpot would people recommend getting, considering my future goals? :wha:

Cheers,
Marty

What batch size are you eventually looking at? For a bog standard 23l, try and get a pot at least 30l at the very minimum. Some of us do it with smaller but it's a real ballache.

catering-direct-fr (i think, someone correct me if i'm wrong) on ebay france do big stainless stockpots for a good price and they can easily be converted to boilers later.

Alternatively, Hop and Grape do a full all grain setup for a reasonable price and you don't have to use all the bits to start off with.

I'd get 80-100ltr, and some cornies, you don't have to fill it but the option is there, that said I have been known to push the boat out a bit now and then. Don't get less than 50 ltr anyway, not much help am I, oh yeah, forget the sugar and replace it with malt extract, unhopped, less watery and more flavour. I know I'm right on the cornies, you'll soon be sick of cleaning bottles.

ps. Welcome

You're making a kit so don't need to boil anything so you don't need one yet. Follow this guide except add sugar (or spraymalt) instead of the extra tin (which you won't have as it's a 1 can kit).

For the size of your kettle, think of a number then double it.
