I've popped into Grimsby today to buy my sister a birthday present. I couldn't find anything suitable, and this must have caused some kind of imbalance in my brain (what with the worry, and everything), and the next thing I knew I had driven to the other end of town and brought a brewferm Triple kit from my local HBC, which is really odd, because now that I get it home, I notice that it is a 9 litre kit, and I have a 15l FV not doing anything at the moment. What a happy coincidence.

Now, it states that it needs 500g of sugar. Would this be improved by 500g of spray malt instead, if so, what type (i.e. light, dark, etc)?

I'll start by saying that I've never made that kit before. Is it extract? Is it AG? I'm assuming it's a Belgian Tripel.

I've made plenty of AG tripels. They are one of my favorites. My goto recipe is just pilsner malt and sugar. Very simple. What are the kit ingredients? If you go with spraymalt, I'd definitely recommend light. Belgian beers in general usually use some amount of sugar so it's not out of place. But that is with AG.

cheers for the reply, yes, it's a Belgian Triple. It's a 9l kit, so I thought it wouldn't need any brewing sugars but I hadn't accounted for the increased strength. It only asks for 500g so it's good to hear that sugar is used normally in AG so I'll stick to that.

I'll qualify that with it's "normally used in BELGIAN all-grain beers." It helps thin the body of the beer on the high gravity Belgians like a tripel. So it's up to you if you want to add it to your beer but it's definitely to style to have some sugar in there.
