Hello! I recently moved my kegerator to its place in the brew cellar, I decided to defrost the bottom freezer compartment which I use for my hops and some grain, I found a 100g un opened pack of brewers gold AA 7.9% should I just use it for a bittering hop? I read somewhere that its pretty useless as an aroma hop besides its 'best before' was last April... (it has been frozen for 12 months however).

Does anyone have any tested recipes I could have a go at. At least then I'll know if the hops are knackered rather than my brew design.

Im afraid your knackered.
Do you use them as a bittering hop and take the gamble that they are still good, and if they are not youve wasted a brew. Or throw them away. At £1.97 per 100g id bin them.
P.S. take better control of your stock rotation :D
Ive got 300g of home grown Target hops that were not dried out correctly and have gone "musty", that I havent got the heart to throw away
On second thoughts, yes, use them as a bittering hop. They might not be as good but the beer you make will be drinkable

Thanks!

Sad news but it seems a waste to not at least make something up with them.

If it turns out to be an award winning I'll have to wait 12 months to make some more (for the hops to go off!).

Never seen hops with a best before date. If they are vacume sealed they will be fine for using but the AA% will have dropped. Do you know what year harvest they were? Id personally use them as a late hop. You could do a clone of Crouch Vales Brewers gold, which is mid ranged bitterness, golden beer with BG at the end. 4%ABV. Open the pack and give them a good rub, if they smell good, they probably are. If they smell musty or cheesey then bin them

I did a collaboration brew with another brewery in essex last year and some of the hops we used were Fuggles from 2004. The AA has all gone but there is still a bit of beta acid in there. Aparrently this sort of thing is quite common in Belgium.
