Just wondering, I did my brew today and I pitched the yeast a few hours ago, but I can't see anything happening. Should there be scum on the surface already or does it take a while?

I added a pack of Nottingham yeast to 30 degree water as it said on the pack, then stirred that well into the fermenting bucket.
 
You did give it a dam good thrashing to aerate the wort giving it a good layer of froth on top didn't you :hmm: . You may not see any fermentation action till tomorrow though. Don't keep opening the lid to check just have a feel of the lid and there should be positive pressure from the inside then you know its working ;)

I gave it a pretty good stir, although I wouldn't call it a thrashing really. Might use a whisk rather than a spoon next time :D
 
Spoon will be fine in future, just reverse the stirring directions a few times.

Give at least 24 hours before looking for signs of fermentation. Depending on temperature it could take a few days to start.

All will be fine, just allow time for things to happen.

Ta lads, it's already going better than last time I did it straining malt through a towel! It's actually got some sugar in it this time according to the hydrometer! :cheers: :drink:
 
Well, it's gurgling like you wouldn't believe now, nearly non stop, with a great white flufy head. It looks like a 5 gallon Guinness in the kitchen :thumb:

I just need to hope it doesn't taste like kack now.

I'm tempted to do a secondary ferment on it and make a strawberry stout.
