My last brew produced more break material ( the white floating lumpy stuff )than normal that got through to the fermenter. I noticed it only after having added the yeast and was checking later for any signs of fermentation.
Is it beneficial to try and remove this before the ferment, or does it not matter and will eventually drop to the bottom with all the other gunk.

Doesn't matter, it'll drop out with the rest, or remain floating either way you should be able to get the beer out with getting it into your keg/ bottling bucket.

I tipped the lot into my fermenter when I did my recent AG#1 - and it all ended up in the trub at the bottom by the end of fermentation, and I've ended up with a crystal clear beer even before bottling and conditioning.

So I reckon it doesn't make a great deal of difference!
