There is no problem using brass in brewing equipment.

There is a scare going round (Perpetuated by John Palmer) that the lead added to brass for machining purposes can leach out into the beer . . . like all 'good' research, its a great theory but not borne out in practice.

In the real world tests have been done using a wort split between two boilers once with all stainless parts and the other with brass and copper fittings . . . . The lead content of the worts were measured before and after boiling and there was no significant increase in the levels of lead in either vessel.

Of course Stainless parts are so much shinier

I will be honest . . . I am in the process of reducing the amount of brass that comes into long term contact with my wort/beer . . . but I am not being totally anal about replacing all the brass

Before the advent of cheap, mass-produced plastics; a lot of the beer taps used to draw off cask conditioned ales were made from brass.
