Hi all; I'm just after some advise on bottling times. I bottled my first brew three weeks ago today and kept it inside until last Wednesday where I then moved it to the shed. At what point should my brew be ready for trying and how long will my brew keep for??? :drink:

Try it now :thumb: If it's not ready give it another week and try again ;)

Until you've drunk it :drink: or about a year if you have that much will power

General rule of thumb is to leave it one week for every 10 points of original gravity (ignoring the 1.0 bit), so 1.040 = 4 weeks, 1.050 = 5 weeks and so on.

I would suggest that should be a minimum, I try to leave mine 2-3 months, although I will test one a week until it gets there.

I'm not really sure how long it will keep but some of mine has made it to 8 months.

As Moley says the 1 week per 10 points of original gravity is a "General rule of thumb" some beers are best drunk young, such as mild or wheat beers and others may take months to come right, such as strong ales and imperial stouts etc :thumb: but the beauty of brewing your own is that you can sample when you like and make your own decision

Hi,

I bottled yesterday after 11 days in the fermentor. It is a pale which was 1040 og. Does that mean I should leave it for another 4 weeks before drinking? I cant wait that long! :( I guess I'll try a bottle each week and see how it goes.

To borrow an old football saying (and changing it slightly), "If its good enough, its old enough!". Just sample it regularly, you will know when its ready and then not too long after that it will be finished. ;)

Sorry, but by my interpretation it's even worse than that, a week in a warm place and then 4 weeks somewhere cool.

Seriously though, it needs a week in a warm place to start to smooth out and get a bit of fizz, and then test one a week.

Equally seriously, hide a few bottles away and forget about them for 6 months.

If your FV is now empty, get another brew on the go. Try to brew faster than you can drink and you might end up with some beers which are properly conditioned.

Well make her some decent, drinkable wine for 50p a bottle and I'm sure she'll come around

I rarely come out of a supermarket nowadays without a couple of litres of fruit juices or a bag or two of sugar but I think Mrs. Mole prefers that to the £20 a week or so I was previously spending on alcohol.

God knows I've tried, she doesnt really drink anymore. Because, the last time she got drunk was about 6yrs ago on cider i think. She ended up snogging my mates mrs, we had a wet t shirt competition which ended up with them both getting their babylons out :thumb:

Obviously me and my mate steve were loving this  but it all got a bit squiffy when I saw my mates wife squatting in my back garden wetting her flower, when asked why she didnt used the toilet she replied that she couldnt get in because my mrs was crashed out on the bathroom floor wedging the door closed

This particular evening never gets mentioned now

Happy days

Thanks for sharing that, I've just sprayed a mouthful of wine all over my keyboard
