whilst searching yesterday for something to do with oxi clean, I came across an interesting post. someone on here had said about rinsing bottles after pouring a beer 3 times with hot water then inverting to dry and adding some star san solution and capping with foil ready to store then when ready for filling pouring out the solution.

I have been emptying a bottle and rinsing with hot water a good few times and letting dry. but then also cleaning them with oxi clean as I would with bottles from the pub bins that are dirty. then dunking in videne and bottling which takes a while.

the last batch I washed all the bottles a few days before then stored on the bottle tree and just dunking in videne on bottling day. not sure how this has worked out as I haven't tried any of the bottles yet but didn't seem to be anything inside when I sanitized them.

can I just rinse the bottles straight after emptying and not do the oxi clean step? do the bottles need foil capping, put upside down or anything special? or will they be ok being left stood up and a good dunking and shake with videne on bottling day?

thanks

I give my bottles a quick rinse with hot water after pouring. Then wait until have a dozen or so empties, another quick rinse with warm water, sanitise with Star San, put cling film over the top of each bottle and store until ready to bottle.

on bottling day i just whip the cling film off and fill, had no problems at all and probably done about 200 bottles this way now.

As long as you rinse fairly soon after pouring the crud doesn't have chance to dry reducing need for soaking/scrubbing etc.

I use videne so not be putting star San in. Will it be OK to store the bottles clean but covered then just sterlize on bottling day

my bottling day routine is to clean and sterilise b4 use. after i pour i try to rinse out and dry, when i fail or a guest is unaware of the routine i clean b4 shelving..

I reason i HAVE to clean once and sterilise so it may as well be the day im using em.

starsan is persistent, videne isnt and its sanitising properties dissipate with time, so leaving a bottle with videne in it may be counter productive

Get it from llyods pharmacy £6 cheapest place round here. Not even used a quarter of it in about 6 months.

Would leave it dry and covered then videne on bottling day, although they might be better dry and uncovered. I leave my fv's clean with the lid off then just a squirt of videne before using so bottles should be fine.

Its not so much the leaving steriliser in but is a few rinses after emptying enough to clean them.

think u need to resigning yourself to cleaning a bottle at least once between uses, many of us clean more than once, and again if in doubt too,

Unless using something persistent like starsan, always store dry,, anything missed by a rinse or a clean when damp can start growing... and never seal up i use flip top bottles and even stored with the cap on seal down without pressure can encourage anaerobic growth with the smallest residue of moisture..
