As i have never bottled any of my homebrew, can anyone tell me if normal beer bottles are ok (ie abbots ale, speckled hen) to use, also why would anyone use brown or green bottles? surely this would make it hard to see the sediment when pouring.

Any brown ale bottles should be fine. You can use other colours but you'll need to store them in the dark as UV light causes "skunking" of the hops. I use Bud****r bottles too for high ABV stuff where a smaller dose is in order...

Green ones tend to be commercial lagers and can be very lightweight, I'd avoid them.

All beer bottles used commercially are suitable as long as they are sound, especially no chips/cracks at the top. Beer should generally be stored in brown or green bottles to avoid excessive exposure to light, this can spoil the beer. If you have clear bottles always store them in the dark (in supermarkets the turnover is quite high so not really an issue there). As for seeing the sediment I have no problems with that (even with wearing glasses).

Has anyone ever had a problem with skunking?

I've read a lot of posts on here by people advising how to prevent it, but I've yet to read a post by someone who says they have skunked beer, or they have experienced it in the past.
