Hi,

The reason I ask about bottles is that I'm seeing more and more screw tops then corked about and am wondering that if I start collecting screwtop bottles for my wines, Can I cork the screwtops to get a good seal or do I need to buy Coopers pet caps and if so are these good enough I no they probley won't be as good as corks but please tell me.

I have a brewing buddy who swears blimd that the caps wont be a good seal like a cork but as I say I'm not sure?

Any thoughts would be good

Thanks in advance

Ken

Some screwtops are a subtly different diameter to non-screws and the corks may be a poor fit.
The plastic caps are rub - good for keeping stuff clean, or closing stuff you just opened for a day or three, but not much else.
You can re-use the existing screwcaps a few times, and replacement screw tops are availble commercially (talk to bobsbeer)

I've found that screw tops can be re-used, if you kept them when you opened the bottle. If you picked them up from recycling and the top isn't there then I have found that you can use a normal cork, but it might be slightly lose, due to different internal diameter, but if you use a wine bottle neck sleave cover thing (can't think of the name, but they go over the bottle once corked, and you heat them up to shrink to fit), the add an extra layer of protection.

I've not yet had anything in storage long enough to notice if it's a problem.
