I'm cleaning up some old port, and whiskey bottles ready to recieve my 8 gallons of elderberry port in the spring.
The inside obviously presented no problems and the paper labels came off with hot water but I'm left with the glue on some of them which (unlike the stuff used on beer bottles) doesn't want to shift and remains slightly sticky.
I've tried the usual suspects (hot water with bleach, ceramic hob cleaner etc) with no joy.
Does anybody have any tips for getting this stuff off ?

Oh, before anyone suggests it, I don't have a dishwasher.

If there hard to remove I chuck them, but sometimes with fancy bottles I like to keep, I use the spud peeler to remove the glue. Petrol or white spirit helps too

You could try meths :hmm:
Have a peek inside the bins at your local bottle bank and get easy to clean bottles

Good idea. Will pick up some solvent later and try that.
And yes, some of the bottles are pretty fancy and it'd be a shame to chuck 'em.

wd40 works wonders on adhisves take a bit of wiping though and will wash off with some sopy water
appantly made from fish oil so its biodegradble if you care about such things
