Hi fellow imbibers,
I've been brewing rubbish for 50 years - but then I'll drink anything!
Started with CJ Berry's beer, malting barley, boiling stinky hops et al.
Then went on to his hedgerow wines by season. Worked in Holland through the 1970s where homebrewing is ILLEGAL . Switched to drinking wine cos the Pils stuff I found Pi*s. Only one Bar/Cafe in Amsterdam sold draught Guinness while I was there. Dutch language is pronounce as writ: I heard a Dutchman ask for "Gwyns alstublieft" and the barman poured a pint of the blackstuff!!!
Didn't bother brewing again till I retired 10 years ago. Gave up on hedgerow and fruit wines cos they take too long to age. Switched to Concentrated grape from Wilko. Brill, ready in 2 - 3 weeks! Found a cheaper way: fruit juice cartons plus a small tin of grape concentrate. Cheap, quick and easy. For visitors, I keep LIDL 3 bottles for £10: even the grandchildren say, when offered my latest: "er...no thanks, coffee please"
Plum harvest was brill last year, several gallons of beaut wine. My own grapes, a red German variety, plentiful and sweet emough, but consistently make crud wine.
Planning: Sloe wine (never tried before). Am wondering if Sloe & blackberry might be OK. Elderberry and Blackberry (plenty at the moment) make a memorable wine but the elderberry slows down the drinkability too long. Seven years, I read?
Drinking: Tesco Purple grape juice + concentrate wine.
Brewing: Tesco red grape juice + concentrate wine.
