Hi Guys,

So recently I bought this boiler and used it to make my very first all grain.http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/acatalog/Thorn_Electrim_Boiler.html

The beer turned out ok, although under hopped (I think there wasn't enough grain in there, since I have looked at other recipes which had much more).

One problem I had was the tap getting clogged. I didn't do enough reading up on all the ins and outs of equipment, so didn't realise it was nessecary to have some kind of screen.

Since I've been looking about for good ways to make a form of screen, and realised there's a lot. However for ease and relative cheapness I just noticed this. http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/acatalog/T_Bazooka_Screen.html

Can anyone share there thoughts of why it might be no good? Also, when it says "You will need so other fittings" what might be needed?

Cheers!

That screen looks fine, I take it your not a DIY kind of Guy, hence you looking at buying stuff, Many have made similar after pulling apart those stainless steel braided hoses used for water piping and taps etc.

I don't know what fitting you have in the boiler but at a guess you'll need a small lenght of 15mm copper pipe to attach the t piece to your tap or some silcone tube to attach it. Silicone Tube can be got here and is great stuff fits a treat onto 15mm piping.

I am potentially a DIY kind of guy, but being a student I don't have access to a load of tools (yet). I was looking at canabalising a braided hose, but a quick browse online at prices made me think this is probably just easier for the sake of a pound or so. I'm also looking to making an order over £65 so I get free shipping, so this would help boost it up.

I'll also look into that tube. Cheers for the help!

i have a hop strainer on my mash tun but since i have placed a fine sieve on top of it my wort runs out faster and i dont get a stuck mash

I’ve got a bazooka screen but I found too much cold break was getting in. My boiler is 40cm wide so the hops were too thinly spread out so they are not really making the hop bed that I have read about people filtering through, so this was not really helping.

I have only a couple of AG’s under my belt and I am going to try the stainless steel braided option that muddydisco suggests with all stainless steel hose clamps. Then whirlpool the wort so most of the “bits” end up in the middle, hopefully meaning I can draw clearer wort out from round the edges.

The bazooka screen might be OK for others but with my setup it wasn’t what I was hoping for, it might do a better job in a mash tun than my boiler. My next brew is a couple of weeks away yet so I will see what the difference is like then.
