I use an old keg as my boiler and my deadspace is coming in at a whopping 3 litres.

My strainer holes face the bottom, i use a syphon effect, etc but I can't get it lower than 3 litres left in the tank when testing with water only.

Any ideas? Or is this ok?

I have a similar problem, not quite 3 liters. Last brew I tipped the boiler up and put it through a sieve beer came out clear and tasting good. Next time I will prob sieve it into a large jug and pour it into the fv and hour or so later leaving more of the trub behind...

The syphon effect will stop working as soon as air can get into the system inside the boiler.

Are all your connections in pipework in the boiler sealed.

When it stops flowing do you notice air starting to come out, or is air glugging back in. If air is coming out then you have air getting in somewhere inside the boiler, if air is glugging in then you need to reduce the bore of the outflow pipe outside the boiler, and possibly lengthen it also.

I have a 70 litre boiler and have less than 1/2 litre deadspace.

When you say "air coming out", what exactly do you mean?
