Boil time

My brewing mate quite often boils for less than an hour. Some of his beers are fine, but the rest are best described as puke juice, he gets quite upset as he can't taste anything wrong. I seem to be very sensitive, but if I wasn't I'd worry about giving my beers to others who might be.
 
By the way I use a 3 KW Burco Boiler with the thermostat disabled. I control the voltage ( and hence mash temperature and boil severity) with a home made TRIAC controller......

Puke Juice. Must be a beautiful friendship to survive that. Quite heartwarming, I think I've got grit in my eye.
 
I sometimes do shorter boils and sometimes I dont. I prefer to do a full 60 mins if I can. Having said that I cant tell the difference if I do a short boil or not. I do get a bit nervous about short boils as I think commercial breweries would do it if it was good practice because it would save them thousands/millions just doing a 30 min boil. The only downside Ive read about is possible shelf life problems though. Perhaps, as with a few things (such as over pitching), the problems that might occurs at commercial level dont transfer to HB level (as much)?
