would you use the same grain bill for BIAB as you would if you were going to do the 2 or 3 vessel boiler ,mash tun ,HLT route or does it need to be adjusted if so how would you work this out,I like the idea of BIAB and extract but with extract it costs to much when adding DME would much rather do all grain BIAB method have looked on other sites but would value anybodys suggestions on this

Yeah you use the same. maybe a little more to compensate for low efficiency if you start getting it, but with mini biab i've always hit a good 75%. It's the same recipe etc though, you're doing the same thing, just a different method.

No point doing BIAB if you're gonna use extract with it imo...

thanks for the reply ,not going to do extract with it have done a couple of extract brews but to costly ,like the idea of BIAB just one vessel hopefully it takes the cost down as well what does one of your brews cost approx

Mini-BIAB doesnt work out too cheap for me because I tend to put a lot of effort into the batches so I get a lot of leftover ingredients so might not be the best financially to me  I brew extract in a 10L pot for my kegged beers and they tend to be simple, my BIAB are speciality beers and experiments, or stuff I want to age the hell out of.

After a big £30 order of hops, yeasts and speciality malts, extract batches cost me about £9 now, my local is £2.25 for 500g DME :) maybe you could shop around a bit first! With wise hop selection and yeast harvesting, it gets a lot cheaper.

It is much more inexpensive to BIAB in the long run though, and the beer is much better. You won't regret the jump.

My BIAB set up costs me roughly a tenner a brew for a 5 gallon batch. As has been said it's definitely worth looking round the web for the best deals as prices for the same thing can fluctuate massively (don't know if i'm allowed to post links up here though so i won't). I also save a fair bit from sharing / spliting orders with 2 mates that brew to save postage and culture up yeast for eachother and so on. Even without this though you should be able to come in under 15 quid. Buy your base malt in bulk (25kg sacks) too, as that adds up.
