Although I have been doing BIAB for a while now, recent time constraints due to an online self study course have left little time for brewing and stocks are running low...

So I decided to try one of these new Better Brew kits. The IPA kit comes in sealed, fairly tough, plastic bag with the yeast sachet attached to the underside of the bag. For an inexpensive kit £12.99 it was surprising to see 2.1Kg of malt extract, more than the usual 1.5 or 1.8 Kg for kits in this price range. The yeast sachet too being 10 grams is more than the usual 6 or so supplied with most kits.

Seems a reasonably quality kit and up's the ante in budget kits compared to the single tin offerings.

Anyway the brews now under way, put the bag of malt in hot water while sanitising the the FV. Added the malt along with some hot water according to the instructions. Used 1 Kg of brewing sugar, stirred well and topped up with cold. Pitched the yeast. Job done in under 30 mins from start of sanitising to fitting the airlock.

As it's the first time with one of these new style kits I made it exactly as per the instructions. I'll let you now how it progresses...

Be interested to hear your thoughts on it brewed "straight", I've just bottled one made with a tin of LME and 40g chinook dry hop.

Made mine up last week too... Altho added a little extra sugar as wanted to use it up. So made with 500g light due and 800g of brewing sugar. Lookinh nice from fv (as far as I can tell). Can't wait to get bottled to try, but leaving patiently to ferment first :p

Bottled this kit yesterday evening, this is my first Better Brew kit and also my first IPA kit, so it will be interesting to compare to the other kits that I've brewed so far (Wherry, St.Peter's Golden Ale, Cooper's Aussie Lager, St.Peter's Ruby Red Ale)

I used 500g Dextrose, 500g medium spray malt, in the FV for 16 days, OG was difficult to measure because it was so frothy  , however estimated it to 1042 with a FG of 1011, so should have an ABV of around 4.2%. :hmm:

There was certainly less crud in the bottom of the FV compared to the other kits that I've done, a lovely golden colour, smells good, the initial taste test was promising. :thumb:

So now the difficult bit........as usual I'll leave in a warm room for 7 days and then into the garage for 2 weeks.

 :drink:
