ive put on a youngs harvest pilsner, its been in the fv for 8 days and the gravity reading is at 1.000

there is a horrid smell coming from the fv when i take lid of i assum its the co2 kinda tingles ur nose


but the pilsner itself is rather dark in colour

now im not an expert and dont think ive even tried a pils before, so i was wandering if it sounds normal for it to look that colour, maybe its cause there is 5 gallons of it


but i was just worried it may have a bacteria or something, i dont know


i just hope i havnt wasted my first 40 pints of homebrew


if easier i could put a pic up for u to see

any advice would be very appreciated

I'm a bit surprised it's down to 1.000.
First things first, if the fermentation is finished, taste it :drink:
Remember to clean and sterilize the sampling glass first.

Sometimes the whiff off the top of a brew can be a bit loud.

I often think the brew is too dark in the fv, but it usually looks a lot better when clear and in a pint mug.

it does say in the instructions it should get to 1.004 - 1.000

well it dont taste to bad really

looks more like it should in a glass slightly darker than i thought

think it needs abit of time to clear , so may just put it straight in to a secondary for a couple week?

do i then bottle with sugar and leave another 2 weeks

It may be a little dark but if it tastes ok don't worry.

Those water bottles are no good for long term storage as they are designed for still not fizzy water, so wont hold pressure very well, and they are clear so store out of sunlight or you beer will skunk (GO OFF).

well at the moment it is flat

i was gonna add sugar to the bottle to hopefully give it some fizz

but i can bottle it tomorrow so hopefully it will be ok


also i do store it in a cupboard which is dark so hopefully that will be ok

if it was off or had something wrong with it what would happen, would it get a crust , go dark lol , or funny taste

well it has had couple days in clean pets and it has cleared

looks more like a bitter/ dark lager but looks drinkable

gonna bottle it tomorrow with abit of sugar and hopefuly will be ready to drink soon


cant tell ya how happy i am

but most of all would like to thank u guys for all the help youve given me

im gonna do a lager kit next as thats what i thought this was

any suggestions on which one to try

i read some where that coopers australian is a good one.
also is there anything like newcastle brown ale that i could make as i like that also
