What is the best song ever? I'm thinking lyrics rather than tune.

Here's my choice. If Winter Ends by Bright Eyes. Gritty and descriptive

Chasing cars. By snow patrol

Cos I have just been karaoking with my daughters, to it, special moments.

Script for a Jesters tear or anything by Fish really. A true poet.

In terms of lyrics I would say the best song, at least for me, is You Don't Believe by the Alan Parsons Project.

I'm showing my age here. I'm an old fart okay!

At any rate, below are the lyrics to You Don't Believe.

- Scott

=========

My eyes, with your vision
My choice, but always your decision
My play, with your direction
Well it's my lead, but always your connection

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

My words, your expression
My land, always your possession
My song, your production
My expense, is always your deduction

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

And the face I see before me
Is both sides of a mirror
You really know you've got a hold on me
And the face you're looking into
Is both sides of a window
And any way you look you see through me

My fame, your reflection
My weakness, always your protection
Well it's my terms, on your conditions
And they're my tunes, but they're your compositions

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe

And the face I see before me
Is both sides of a mirror
You really know you've got a hold on me
And the face you're looking into
Is both sides of a window
And any way you look you see through me

But when I look into your eyes you don't believe me
I can see it in your eyes you don't believe
(repeat)

I like songs with stories so i'm guna say:
Kenny Rogers - Ruby, dont take your love to town
Johnny Cash - A boy named Sue.

Probably not the best songs ever but certainly entertaining lyrics.

Some "Script" lyrics:

"I act the role in classic style
Of a martyr carved with twisted smile
To bleed the lyric for this song
To write the rites to right my wrongs
An epitaph to a broken dream
To exercise this silent scream
A scream that's born from sorrow

I never did write that lovesong
The words just never seemed to flow
Now sad in reflection did I gaze through perfection
And examine the shadows on the other side of morning
And examine the shadows on the other side of morning
Promised wedding now a wake
Promised wedding now a wake, awake

The fool escaped from paradise
Will look over his shoulder and cry
Sit and chew on daffodils and struggle to answer "Why?"
As you grow up and leave the playground
Where you kissed your prince and found your frog
Remember the jester that showed you tears, the script for tears

So I'll hold our peace forever when you wear your bridal gown
In the silence of my shame the mute that sang the sirens' song
Has gone solo in the game
I've gone solo in the game, but the game is over"

hard one :wha:

now
past
or permenant

different parts of my life or even my day, dictate a different song

but honestly throughout it all Labi Siffre something inside so strong has been with me for the last 25 years my darkest rock so to speak

less depressingly ..... oh that was the least depressing one

If we are going on lyrics alone, although I'm not a C&W fan, I just love Glen Campbell's Witchita Lineman. Lovely sentiment.

That and 10cc's I'm Not In Love. a brilliant expression of a man who can't express his feelings.

Overall songs, well, that's something that would take quite a bit more thought, although Day In The Life or In My Life by the Beatles would be up there...
