Hi all,

I saw this juice in Morrisons, Beet It, 90% beetroot and 10 % apple, a few months ago and now I have decided to try a batch with molasses sugar instead of white cane.

BeetrootAndRedGrape-2010-01-24-004.jpg

Recipe:
2L red grape juice (320g sugar)
750ml Beet It beetroot and apple (10%) juice (69.75g sugar)
500g molasses sugar
Water to 4.5L
1tsp Young's Super Yeast Compound
1tsp pectolase
1/2tsp citric acid
1tsp glycerine

The hydrometer said 1094 but I'm not sure there is enough sugar in there for that reading.

The molasses sugar and beetroot smell really good together (so I say!) and it has iridescent bubbles on the top.

Hey deisle you are like a mad scientist with all your experiments lol, I hope for your sake that that beet one isnt volatile, being that close to the top of the FV or it could get messylol

Good luck with that one, Ive never tried using alternative sugars, youll have to let us know how it turns out. :thumb:

I was a little concerned when it first started building up steam but it hasn't got any higher and is now like this....

No head, but lots of bubbles and glugs.

Looks great! I`m on the lookout for a quickish red, this could just be the thing. Please keep us posted, love the pics too! ;)

Hi hong,

I hope this has some body, I have done a Young's Red Merlot Kit but was disappointed with the lack of pepper and body, although it did have the fruity tones.

I am wondering if I should take a reading? I think I know what Moley would say... :nono:

It is still doing a glug now and then, maybe at the weekend.

Here is a photo of the red kit I told you about....

The salmon pink rose is a concoction made by myself..

This was a much better wine, I think the bananas really added body and fruit but one person said it was all she could taste and that she "didn't like ripe bananas anyway...but I drank it with some soda....I felt funny yesterday morning as well".

Hi all,

I thought I would let you know how this has gone down.

The colour has turned to brown, even though it has been in a dark cupboard for all but a year. I have not racked this at all, it hasn't moved for the year. The taste is rather nice, a distinct beetroot taste followed by a slightly warm molasses/port taste.

It definitely kicks ass on the ABV, and even though the other half won't drink red she has managed a couple of litres of this!

I have another Dj to go at so maybe I will get a photo up here.

All the best and a happy brew year to you all,

Hi all,

The second batch of beetroot and red grape was racked tonight. It was stored in a brown demi-john and retained a lovely red colour. This wine was made with white caster sugar rather than molasses sugar and it has a much softer after taste. This is definitely the nearest to a supermarket red I have made. It has a nice robust feel in the mouth and plenty of flavour.

I will be putting on a couple of gallons of this next week for sure.

TTFN,

Diesel1.

PS. There are a couple of photos to follow.

There you go. It was superb. SWMBO was very dismissive until the second drop passed her lips!
