on sunday i transfered some coopers euro to a corny. first time using my new toy. unfortunately it obviously has a leak - 20psi reduces to 0 in a few hours. i have narrowed it down to the prv. well i think i have. there seems to be a missing oring.

anyway i will take at least a few days to get a new PRV. i dont really want to waste a whole cannister of co2. will this lager spoil or is likely to be already ? is there anything i can do to save it or will it be fine sitting there for a few days?
its stored in the shed at 10 oc.
cheers

a good tip for checking for leaks is if you can get hold of a spray bottle and fill it with sanitiser or starsan, once you have gassed up and sealed your keg spray the sanitiser over it, if it bubbles at any part it means there is co2 escaping. i would turn the gas off and cover it with a clean tea towel to stop.
does the pressure release valve not just screw into the lid of the cornie? what o ring are you referring to?
did u lube up the ring before use?

this guide mentions an o ring on a prv - see the tips for buying a keg section.

mine doesnt have an o ring at all. it seems to have recessed area where you expect one to sit.

i really should have checked for leaks before filling - assumed the shop meant it when it said it was reconditioned.

Definitely check for leaks first. I have to gas one of my cornies up to around 35 psi before the lid really pops into place. I can then reduce the pressure to what I need.

thanks joey. i had only gone up to 20 psi. ive tried it at 40 psi now to see if makes any difference.
i've been trying for leaks by spraying videne about - this bubbles anyway so its hard to tell to be honest.

abeyptfc - went to watch Partick a few times when i lived up there. do they still have the toilets with no roof? i remember them providing me with a very disappointing shelter during one glasgow down pour.

I doubt it will spoil as there will be a good blanket of co2 in there covering the beer.

nice one man, you will probably have doubled the crowd when you went! the old shed has now been replaced with the jackie husband stand and theres an away stand where the old away terracing was. its still a shitehole though, the team is still ***** aswell! its still better than being an old firm fan though!!

Did you just gas it up to 20 psi and leave it disconnected. If so then it is normal for the pressure to drop to nothing as all the gas will be absorbed into the beer. That is what makes the beer fizzy.

If my cornie lids are being unhelpful when sealing I tend to gas up to 50PSI or until I hear a 'CLUNK' when they seal.. then you can turn the gas down to 4PSI and use the PRV. If in doubt turn off the gas and watch the gauge.. it should stay steady for a day if there are no leaks..

+1 to the soapy water / starsan straying tho.. that works a treat!

**Edit.. as RwSteve says... if your force carbonating the pressure will decrease as the beer takes in the Co2.**

Runwell - yes I did exactly that. I realise the pressure should drop but would twice going from 20 to 0 overnight to be expected? from other things I have read i thought it would be slower than that. Increased it to 40 at midnight last night, by 8am it was down to 20 psi.

Hopefully i'm fussing about nothing. I whacked it up to 50psi as suggested, then dropped it down to 40 psi again. Will see where there gets me.

Thanks for the help.

PTFC - they were Premier League in those glory days, with a terrace to match. Sad to hear it has gone.

update - no leak, my stupidity instead. Just as Runwell suggested the beer is absorbing the CO2. Didnt expect it to happen that quickly. It seems to have balanced out at about 16 psi now, which is the suggested pressure according to the charts, i think.
