Had a can of this last weekend at my local hipster pub. It was really nice. It says smoked porter on the can but when I tasted it I thought, nah, tastes more like a robust porter to me as, although SR has a nice mellow smoky/roasty flavour like robust porters I've made before, I imagine (as the posts I've read from forumites who've used smoked/rauchmalt) smoked malt to give a much stronger flavour. I also thought it tasted really smooth and silky a bit like the dry stout I condtioned for 6 months.

I thought to myself, I haven't made a robust porter for ages, I think Ill make one again. When I checked my books I noticed in my GH book a recipe for a smoked porter. I also looked at the beavertown website to see if it listed the ingredients for Smog Rocket (it does). One of the ingredients is oats, which I'm pretty sure is what gives it the smooth silky taste. Normally I don't like oats in beer as I find it gives a particular sweet taste that I'm not keen on, but I noticed the SR doesn't have this. Possibly/probably because the black malt (and probably smoked malt) obliterate any sweet taste from the oats just leaving the silky smoothness.

So all said, I'm going to have a go at the smoked porter reciepe from my GH book but tweak it a bit by adding some oats

Nice beer. Beavertown are very impressive. I also was surprised by the lack of smokeyness. Although it was a pleasant surprise as I find that smoke flavours can really overawe everything sometimes.

Keep up posted on how you get on. I'd be very interested in having a go at GH's Smoked Porter recipe.

Doing some more house bitter on the weekend but the next brew will be the smoked porter as I need to get some dark ale on the go
