I've been brewing for just over a year now, mainly kits and extract, but I've just bought myself another FV/bottling bucket so want to give batch priming a go. I've got a Muntons premium gold smugglers ale kit on at the moment that'll be ready to bottle in a few days but I'm not sure how much sugar to use :hmm: I normally bottle prime with half teaspoon per 750mls but thats only because I read it somewhere on this forum. Can anyone shed any light on working out how much sugar to use or make a suggestion as to what they do please. :wha:

Hi , for a 23l brew it varies from around 80/100g for light carb and upto 180/200g for a fizzy lager , i'd go for around 100/120g for an ale , just in case , im sure you know but boil say a pint of water add sugar leave for 5 to 10 mins boiling then cool , add to new fv then transfer brew onto it , avoid splashes etc , give it a gentle stir , then bottle straight away :thumb:

Really depends how much of a fizz you want, for 23 ltr I've primed as low as 60g, but I don't like fizzy beer, even 90 to 100g is quite a big difference.

In fact think todays bottling might be an experiment (again :ugeek: ) I'll have a ponder and might prime very low ie next to nothing, through to 80g :hmm:

Low priming works well for me, as soon as its primed I leave bottles in the warm for a week before putting then into the brewstore, then after a month or so (dependant on strength) they're good to go :thumb:

Thanks guys, Awesome advice!

I've brewed this kit short so will have about 20 ltrs to bottle, I think I'll go with your advice baz, as I to don't like a really fizzy beer either, and go for 60g this time. Ive just worked out that I normally add about 2.2 grams of sugar per 750mls so this tally's nicely with 60 grams. :thumb:

Cheers for the short but sweet "how to" Pittsy

Just remember that the beer in the FV will have some CO2 already dissolved. The colder the beer, most likely the higher CO2 content.

This is why I use software like Beer Smith as it will work out how much priming sugar you need if you tell it the temperature and how fizzy you would like it to be.
