Do i need to leave lid loose when fermenting barley wine.

Probably not. If you are worried about the ferment being so vigorous it escapes, you want to fit a blow off tube, but for that you need and airlock hole in the lid. Alternative is to stand the FV on a towel or something "just in case".

Few fermenter lids fit particularly tightly and it will not take much pressure inside for the gas to escape anyway.
