Can anyone tell me what the difference between 2 and 3 piece ball valves is? I can't see any problem with the 2 piece versions whereas the 3 piece just has 1 more seal to potentially fail. Plus there is a reasonable price difference. Is there any reason to use a 3 piece valve preferentially for spigots?

Additionally if anyone can recommend a supplier of cheap but quality plumbing bits I'd be grateful. Actual plumbers must use these things and I can't believe they're paying £30 plus for them.

Thanks.

Cleaning is the reason. There's a void inside ball valves around the ball that should be clean and dry or you run the risk of organisms growing in the dark damp conditions.

3 piece valves are designed to come apart easily and do so. I believe 2 piece valves also come apart with some more effort.

Google "homebrew ball valve infection" for reasons why you want to make the quick task of cleaning them a regular routine.
