Hi,
Since the birth of my son 20 months ago I have had little time to brew.
So yesterday I did my first brew for over two years, it was a rhubarb saison.
I have decided that I have too much kit, taking up more space than it should and I can not spend whole days lugging kit through the house into the garden to make beer.
So I have decided to mothball my Grainfather and go low tech.
I will be doing small biab batches in my 20 litre Burco, using a straining bag. I will use my FV filled with cold water to do a dunk sparge. Then pour those second runnings back into the Burco to boil. Maybe then go the no chill route, I will still have my fermentation fridge under the stairs, so can chill over night in that.
I believe I can cut my at hand kit size to a quarter of what it is now and do my brewing comfortably in an evening.
Can somebody tell me where I can get a suitable straining bag for my 20 litre Burco, it is a modern concealed element type?
Also if heat is applied while the bag full of grain during mashing, can it melt the bag?

I got mine for my Burco from eBay, but so long ago I can't see the purchase on my account, sorry. I made sure I measured diameter and depth though. Also seen them on wish, but not sure how reliable that site is.
 
Oh, and I got one with drawstring around the top where in hindsight I wish I got the one with tabs for easier lifting out. Has your Burco got a twist lid thing for locking in place as they might impact the style and size? . Mine still closes with the drawstring.

My lid is the flat sort that just rests on top.

I looked into doing something similar before getting my Grainfather. From memory you can burn/melt the bags if they touch the element. Could you rig up some sort of false bottom to the Burco?

Yes I could look out for something or to start with just get the strike water to the right temperature and wrap the boiler in an old duvet.
 
Make sure to raise the bag with a false bottom like a cake stand or similar so as to raise it of the element although concealed as the temp doesn't distribute properly causing a bubble or blooping effect. I have a Cygnet 30l and although fantastic my first BIAB had this issue. Needs to be raised at 3 inches from bottom.
 
Do any of you use the original tap on the Burco?
If so what do you use as a hop filter?
I still have the original tap on. I bag my hops in the draw string bags you get in Sainsbury's for the fruit and veg. Whirlpool using a paddle leave for 5 or 10 mins then transfer to chill overnight in a cube
