I have been fermenting Muntons Old Conkerwood for 8 days, its now at 1020

However, i tasted a bit just now and it is terrible - a very sharp vinegar type taste

is it in infected or something?

If it tastes and smells like vinegar and nothing at all like beer, then I am afraid yes it's infected :(
If you followed a good cleaning and sanitising regime then you have been very unlucky and got an bacterial infection in your brew.
It is unfortunate but it happens :(

It is worth giving all your brewing kit a good clean and sanitise everything that comes into contact with your beer with a strong chlorine based sanitiser before you brew again :thumb:

if you use bleach to give it a clean, make sure it's not scented... cos the scent will carry over to your brew.

oh and use thin bleach... thick bleach leaves an oily residue that's a ******* to shift

oh and if you do use bleach, rinse that fermenter a shed load of times afterward.... like at least 3 or 4.... you dont want a trace of it in your next brew

If it's a plastic FV I'd replace it just in case new FV = £7 another kit down the drain £16 :thumb:
