Anyone tried the crafty dan ales?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has tried the crafty dan ale from morrisons? I love the 13 guns AIPA but I tried one called Lil Bewdy that I really enjoyed. Interesting mixture of hops and I wouldn't mind cloning it. The malt is Maris Otter. Thwaites Ale Yeast (maybe a SO-4 as an alternative?), hops are Topaz, Galaxy, Summer, Ella, Challenger, Goldings and Motueka.

I love the 13 Guns, really good stuff - currently £3.75 for 4 330ml cans in Tesco at the moment, absolute bargain! Got a can of it in front of me now and the ingredients are:

Malts:
Pale ale (presumable MO?)
Munich
Caramalt
Rye

Hops:
Centennial
Citra
Amarillo
Apollo
Chinook
Kohatu

I also love the 'Crafty Dan' bottled pale ale @ 6%. Really nice and balanced, with good sweetness. It's one of the best beers I've had from one of the 'bigger breweries', I'd love to find it on cask somewhere.

I don't think the 13 Guns is as good as it should be, given the ingredients. Bit harsh. Just my taste probably.

Yup, 13 guns was ok.

Is the Lil Bewdy in morrisons? I've heard of it/seen it but can't remember where from.

Brewdog's punk ipa is getting too peachy less orangy for me now so I'm looking for something else to replace it, and Lil Bewdy could be it?

Agree with this. The Lil bewdy was the better of the two I tried in my opinion.

+1 for Goose Island its not as in your face as many newer AIPAs but its a lovely beer

If you want the Thwaites strain of yeast, and can be bothered to culture it up, Thwaites nutty black bottles are supposed to have the primary strain in them.

I've never cultured yeast but I'm more than willing to give it a go. I'm just thinking about weights. I'll be doing a 23l brew when I get around to it.

It's not hard to do, just a bit time consuming - takes about 2-3 weeks

I have now.. Asda in wythenshawe are doing it for £2 a bottle.. Very nice! :thumb:

Glad you like it! I think it's a great beer. And I worked at the college in wythenshawe for a while and used to go in the Asda. Small world. :thumb:
