Prices of some hop varieties have risen by up to 50%, industry sources say, while others are up to five times more expensive or simply not available, according to insiders.

 ...................

Well while I was browsing for hops I came across a seller who was selling a handfull of English hop seed for 99p, so I gave it a try. If nothing comes of it then I may have lost 99p. They have been soaking and are in their warm period before going into the fridge for 4 weeks, then they get planted.
My plan is to get them going in plugs and then disappear up to the railway line which is disused and now a path, but it has very nice south facing steep banks - ideal for a hop to grow along and up, and plant them out there. They are wild hops after all.
Hopefully in a few years time myself - or other brewers can harvest their own. They may not be as good as some of the specialist varieties but they should offer something. They grow the grain in the fields after all.

Yup. Used the Aurora I won on jims ( I used dana as the bittering hop though ). Even though its a nice bitter I think the hop is more suited to and APA and would go nice with an american C hop that has a citrus/graefruit flavour

Well if its a nice brew  maybe you can pass your recipe on :thumb:

I'm going to use whatever I can get going forward. If the usual suspects are sky high on price because of the breweries, the I'll use other options. I like the idea of using what the others aren't using anyway.

I was reading last week about how Sam Adams, because of their size, has full contracts with suppliers and are able to keep supply up and then they partner with the small breweries, because they want to keep craft brewers going. Thought it was pretty neat anyways!

I've got three different hop plants that I bought last year and I'm trying to germinate a few more from seeds right now. Goodness knows what hops will grow like in the wet, cold Scottish highlands but we will see. Should I have any luck, I'll have to make three different SMaSH beers to figure out what they taste like.

he's probably going to multiply the hops in the recipe x 8

To be fair myqul you are at the start of your hoppy journey. Beware it is a path to ruin. Do not forsake your porters & stouts. may they co-exist in peace

Morelike x10:lol:

At some of those prices for the American hops in short supply it'll deffo be my path to (financial) ruin - I'm just praying I never get a taste for citra . Dont worry a smoked oat porter is up next so I haven't sold my soul for the recipe for the worlds best DIPA just yet
