One of my first Partial Mashes was a 2 can Wilko Golden Ale with MO & Amber malt, with English hops (Bramling X). Decided to revisit this approach today with 1.2kg MO, 300g Crystal and then First Gold and Challenger at 45 mins and 15 mins (50g in total).

As I "only" got a 9L boil, it seemed a lot easier to heat to a boil and cool down afterwards than a 2.5kg mash.

I have been using US 05 for a while now and although it really needs 2 wks in primary FV and another in secondary, I am very happy with the results.

Hi Slid,

sounds good, did you use both cans plus the maris otter ? What was your Staring Gravity ?

Hi Spapro

Yes I did use both cans - even a small quantity of grain, mashed and boiled with hops makes a big difference. I brewed it to 27L as US 05 does not seem to give rapid initial ferments and the Coopers FV with the krausen collar also helps avoid difficult situations.

Starting gravity, I never bother with measuring. I measure the FG to give me an excuse to sample the beer that goes in the bottles and a spreadsheet that guestimates ABV on the basis of what went in, plus assumtions regarding mash efficiencies and yeast attenuations that I basically make up from one to the next. Generally 65% efficincy and 70-75% attenuation, depending on amount of speciality grains and beer darkness. Also you get poor attenuation in the summer and it leads to fizzy beer later.

Must remember to reduce priming sugar in the summer. Starting with the next one.

Would guesstimate SG somewhere in the 1050-1055 range.

I like your approach, and yes, given what went in tells you pretty much where you are ending up anyway.

Hope the beer turns out great for you
