Joists in most houses are strong enough to take the weight of a full bath of water. They have to be, especially in older pre-plumbing houses where the bath was portable and could be set up in any room.

There are always exceptions to the rule of course, as a friend of mine found out when she got into the bath one day and found herself in her downstairs neighbours' bathroom! She and her husband moved to a narrowboat afterwards on the basis that it was safer.
