 HI all. I will be starting AG brewing fairly soon. Boiler is on its way and mash tun etc in the process of manufacture.

Could someone post, or point me in the right direction, recipe + method for a basic English bitter please.

Also what is the best book for clone beers?

Regards Richard G :drink:

Recipe for 23L of a 'basic' bitter - Should be around 1.044, aim for around 30-35IBU (If using a brew program)

3750g Pale Malt
250g Crystal Malt

Mash for 90 Minutes Sparge to collect 27L then boil for 90 minutes with

50g Goldings for 90 minutes
20g Fuggles for 15 minutes
15g Fuggles at switch off

Dry hop with 15g of Goldings in cask (Optional)

Method - Can't go much wrong with BrewStews How To

Graham Wheelers Brew Your Own British Real Ale

Dave lines Brew Beer Like Those You Buy is OK . . . but even though it has been 'revised' the recipes still use a ridiculously high efficiency and too much hops . . . can produce nice beer though . . .plus it uses ingredients that are difficult to get hold of nowadays.

Well done Richard, I hope all goes to plan.
I totally agree with AM's post and there is the recipe section at the top left.
I think you'll find the effort worth while (the first one always causes the most concern).

Tip) Don't forget to close all taps and fit your hop strainer!

Alemans recommendation is a good one. Almost exactly like my first ever AG - it turned out very well. :thumb:

 Thanks all for your encouragement. Will let you know how it goes. Hoping for the end August to start.
will let you know how it goes :drink:
Sorry Richard i couldnt resist this. So are you going to let us know twice.

But on a more serious note mate, ther isnt anything to panic about, Just remember to take your time and not to forget the hop strainer.
Also as mentioned above, this guide is a must read - viewtopic.php?f=30&t=493

Brewstews how to realy is a must read as Corby Dave and others have said. I read it at least 5 times before my 1st AG and at least twice on the day as well :D

Just take your time and dont read too much into things, it realy is not that hard a process. Getting it down to a fine art will be the hard part :D
