Hi All

Bit of a strange question probably how much does the smell from boiling the hops drift in the open air?

I will be brewing in a outside garage that is on the property line with next door. The garage door is probably about a meter / 2 meter away from where there window is and I am a bit concerned about the smell attacking their house.

Here is a pic...

How much have you noticed the smell drifting ?

There's a good chance of them smelling it, especially if the wind is in the wrong direction, would your neighbours ignore it for the occasional bottle of homebrew? If not boil some cabbage in your garage until they scream for you to start brewing :D

Trying to do everything to avoid having to drill a hole for an extraction vent at the back of the garage...

The garage is about four meters long. If I extracted the smell out of the back of the garage I guess thats going to solve the issue ? or does it end up stinking up the whole neighbour hood regardless ?

Going to be using a system extraction method as shown in this topic. Credit to BarnsleyBrewer

its no worse than cooking a tasty dinner , i wouldn't worry about it too much , yes they'll smell it a bit but many people like it

Also, it's only for 90 mins. Do you get on well with them? Perhaps just let them know you are doing it.

It's not an unpleasant smell anyway. Better than the smells coming from the farmers fields right now.

If I was you and they were none brewers ( the lowly folk ) I would take a few hops around to them, explain that you were going to brew some beer and it includes hops...like these.... let them have a smell. Invite them to pop around when your brewing and promise them a bottle. Then everyone will be happy.
Otherwise they might report you for smoking wacky backy in your garage. ... :D

During my first AG brew my neighbour came round to see what was going on, there was steam going over the fence as well as the waft of brewing

However he wasn't offended, he was rather impressed, hadn't had a whiff like that since the local brewery where he used to live closed down :D

He was even happier when he was offered a sample or two

My **** neighbours have fires on saturday afternoons to burn excess wood. Despite repeated attempts to ask them to confine it to the night when we don't want to sit in the garden, they seem content to carry on, ruining everybody's dinner, washing and general life in the process.

Sod it, do it anyway. You're not as bad as them.

It can depend quite a bit on the hop variety and quantity, but I know that the aroma from my garage reaches the road about 6m away in a pretty noticeable fashion (I've had some kids stood there loudly pretending to cough and retch..). I really like the smell but I know some people that don't at all.

The extraction is a very good idea; aside from the aroma, without it in winter my garage develops its own icy rainfall with all the condensation - its horrible! And yes, the plumes of steam from the door can also be pretty exuberant so theres no disgising where its coming from.

Thankfully my neighbors are further away and don't seem to mind, or at least haven't complained. I have heard of people having problems though so I think you're right to comnsider it, including one chap who got visits from the local plod because the idiots next door were convinced homebrewing should be illegal.

Cheers
Kev

I was lucky i was never that close to the neighbours house for it to drift swmbo used to moan a bit though my neighbours moan about swmbo smoking in our back yard so they would have moaned about that ,Best thing brew where you want then ask the neighbours if it was a problem if they say they could smell it then sort something if they dont mind then your ok :thumb:

I would speak to your neighbours first, if you explain what you are up to they will more than likely only be interested and not mind at all, perhaps a free bottle or two might swing it for definate?

If they have got a major problem with it then sort out the extraction setup...its not like you are going to be brewing everyday...or are you? a bit of smell for a few hours every couple of weeks isnt so bad and like already posted we live near farms which pump out god awful smells all the time and I would never dream of complaining!

Talking to one side is fine... They are really good neighbours and doubt they will be bothered even if they can smell it. They are the ones in the photo.

We don't get on with the other side (or I should say they don't get on with us) but they are moving soon anyway :P

If you are only brewing for personal consumption I doubt you'll have a problem with the neighbours tat a free bottle or two can't sort out, if you're thinking about a micro brewery then get someone who knows about LEV regs in to sort it out, your permit / license will also have specific conditions to meet stating the exhaust velocity and stack height.

I only want to brew the standard 40 pints once a month or so :)

Mate,

I must commend you on your thoughtfullness for your neighbours, I wish more people were like that.

But in this instance I really wouldn't worry about. It's really not that big a deal and not much difference to smelling what someone else is cooking for their dinner I would have said.

stuff em m8 why worry about it if you get on with them and they drink i sure after a few brews every thing will be :drunk: :drink: :thumb:

There is obviously no reason why you cannot do this so by talking to them first you are being courteous which they will hopefully appreciate.
