Ok, I've done the coolbox to mashtun conversion - worked out my deadspace which is 1.2L
Got my 10metres of copper microbore to make the chiller (going for single for starters, but I can easily add another coil to make it a double)
Got a boiler - 32L stockpot (I plan to upgrade to a 50L or a 70L one from the malt miller with a tap eventually)
Got all the other stuff etc.
A couple of questions:
1st question:
My 32L boiler doesn't have a tap, so I am guessing I will need to syphon the wort from the boiler post chilling, and I had two thoughts:
When I syphon it I'll need to strain it, could I easily make a strainer from a say circular piece of copper (i.e. a copper ring) put in the bottom of the boiler with 1mm or 2mm holes drilled (which size?), much like the ones you add to the tap - I say circular as it needs to sit flat on the bottom and be steady and perhaps hook over the side of the pot (like the wort chillers).
I suppose I could strain it through a hop bag in a funnel at the same time as syphoning, but I was wondering about the filter bed and getting the hot break filtered out.
2nd question:
I appreciate that I don't want an infection in the wort from chugging on the syphon tube, and I can use the second piece of pipe whipped out so my mouth isn't on the tube. However I was wondering if one of those cheap drill pumps would do the job - attached to the hop filter strainer etc. The thing I am concerned about is whether the internal vanes (or whatever they are called) of these drill pumps would taint the wort?
I didn't really want to drill the boiler for a tap in case I make a hash of it or couldn't get it to seal properly - as then it would be knackered
thanks in advance.
